St. Thomas More School Named Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

St. Thomas More Catholic School (STM) has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The announcement was made Wednesday, Sept. 28, by the U.S. Secretary of Education John King. St. Thomas More is one of 50 private schools in the country to receive this award.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has awarded St. Thomas More Catholic School with the “Exemplary High Performing School Award”. Every year the U. S. Department of Education identifies and disseminates knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices that enables all students to master challenging and personal growth opportunities. STM’s standardized test scores met and surpassed the required top 15% in the nation in reading and math.

The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating an exemplary educational environment for student success.

Dr. Judy Armstrong, STM Principal, says “This Blue Ribbon award validates the dedication and achievements of our students and faculty as we partner with our families to prepare STM students for the future. This honor affirms our mission of “…continuing a legacy of excellence in religious and academic education in a nurturing environment that fosters self-discipline.”  We are extremely proud of our entire STM community. It is a tremendous honor to receive this prestigious recognition on behalf of all who have contributed to STM’s success.

Fr. Tom Duhé, pastor, stated “When I arrived at St. Thomas More, Dr. Judy Armstrong had been principal for one year. She is the best principal I have worked with in the schools I have been pastor. Her focus has been on the students and teachers to make our school what it is today. The work of the students, the faculty and the adminstration has enabled our school to score in the top 15% in the nation in reading and math. I have never been so proud of our administrators, excellent teachers and students. All of your hard work has brought us out of the depression of the flood to the joy of being a National Blue Ribbon School. God bless everyone who makes our school the success it is today!”

Fr. Eddie Martin, parochial vicar at STM, adds “The excellent educational environment created and flourishing here at STM is a result of the commitment of students, faculty, and the families which comprise and support our school to develop and share the gifts they have been given by our Creator. The Catholic faith is integrated into all aspects of formation here including weekly mass attendance, retreats, and access to the sacraments. We are also very fortunate to have the leadership of Dr. Judy Armstrong. Her love for her staff, students, and teaching vocation was never more visible than during the recent flooding which affected over thirty percent of both students and faculty.”

St. Thomas More Catholic School and the other National Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored at a recognition ceremony on Nov. 7 and 8 in Washington, D.C. For more information about the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, please visit
